* Plot Summary *

Lise is a servant who works for Antonia, the imperial princess of Austria.
Since her family had also worked in the castle,  Lise grew up never knowing of the outside world.

May 16th… A day that changed her fate.
The incident had occurred in the exact way they had feared.
After Marie Antoinette contracted a high fever and fainted during her deliverance ceremony, Lise takes the “Substition Medicine”- a drug that has been passed down the House of Habsburg for generations- to take Marie Antoinette’s place.

Since the “Substitution Medicine” is only able to change one’s appearance and not their personality or voice, Lise began living a lifestyle she is unaccustomed to in the Palace of Versailles until Marie Antoinette recovers.

After her recovery, Marie Antoinette returned to the Palace of Versailles and Lise’s task was now complete. Before she returned to her home country, she decided to spend some time in Paris.

As Lize makes her way through an upheaved France, what kind of ending awaits…?

* My Thoughts *

The minds behind Hanayaka Nari, Waga Ichizoku and Enkeltbillet brings us Marie Antoinette’s Life: The Otome Game. I was way more dismissive of this at first (in spite of the fact that I enjoyed Hanayaka and have Enkeltbillet), but over time, I just stopped caring. I can only imagine the pain this may be causing French history enthusiasts, though. My heart goes out to youse! I see stuff I like get butchered over and over and over again… Bet you lot thought you weren’t next!

If you’re not familiar with French history or plain don’t care about historical veracity, I’m confident that this won’t be a trainwreck, as Takagi Ayumi is in charge of the scenario again- so expect an enjoyable time, but not an educational one. After checking out previews of the gameplay system for months, it’s essentially a French clone of Hanayaka Nari, with the map movements, missions, items = usual post-game bonuses and all. Not a horrendous thing per se, but… Lacking imagination, Ichi Column! You’re not forced to do them too, so for those who just want to enjoy the story- just skip the map parts and keep on reading. Of course, this means you miss out on a shite-ton of bonuses, but if you don’t care about 100% completion…

I’m a big fan of inter-class romances (partly why I enjoyed Hanayaka), but I just can’t get interested in Bara ni Kakusareshi. This might be something I’d consider if the reviews don’t indicate it’s a trainwreck and I start running out of otome games I want to play… Which is unlikely!

Far into the future, in which a large-scale conflict devastated the world.
Due to the polluted air, the life expectancy of humans have been halved.

During such an era…
A young boy named Sud, a slum-dweller, had heard a story about a young girl as told by a mysterious fugitive named Atharva.

That young girl’s name is “Eve”.
In the “Neosphere”- a massive underground area left behind by the ancients- she and her Management AI robot “Cradle” have lived together for 3,000 years. Within her, a taboo power rests… So Atharva told Sud.

Having learnt this story, Sud aims to bring this power to the surface above ground to purify it. He heads towards the underground Neosphere with Atharva, but soon after their chance meeting with the young girl, they are attacked by the army.

They had no way of countering the power of  the army’s giant humnoid weapon…

In that moment, as if hailed by the young girl’s danger, the pure-white humanoid weapon “Tierblade” appears before them…

* My Thoughts *

The “awakened powers in the hour of need” thing I loathe (it’s on the Mary Sue litmus test for a reason)! Somebody graduated with honours from the bad shounen manga writing school! Plus the announcement was made during the airing of Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans, which does have many a female admirer (McGillis mai hot hazubando). Its release is just under a month away from Gundam: IBO’s second season… How opportunistic asf… Just gotta have a laugh at that!

But on the brighter side of things, it’s great to see some different settings and themes used in an otome game. While I’m no longer naive enough to have any hope in more than 10% of otome games that come out each month, I really hope Yuukyuu works out since I’d love to see boundaries pushed, even if a little. I’ve given up on my Naruto (recently achieved by Hyakka Hyakurou) or One Piece-esque (more buff guys in otome games, plz) setting GOOD otome game dreams, so a NOT CAPITALISING ON GUNDAM: IBO, HONEST! otome game? I’ll take it! I mean, sure, it’s not full-on mecha, but it’s better than whatever crap HuneX or Broccoli will have the gall to shart out… and charge people money for it, OMG.

I’ll definitely be keeping a close on eye on how Yuukyuu performs… For the brave souls whom have already preordered… I wish you all the best!

* Plot Summary *

After a long time, Hana is single again. The breakup with her boyfriend Jan has hit her quite hard. While her best friend Kerstin and her childhood friend Furio try their best to free Hana from her depression, she focuses completely on her work and drowns herself in self-pity on the weekend.

But her gloomy mood summons two entities far worse: Two demons start inhabiting her apartment, in order to feed off her strained soul: Tymoteusz and Einar – One residing in her underwear drawer (which he also has happened to turn into a gate to hell itself), while the other possesses her teddy bear.

Adding to that chaos, her neighbor Blanche seems to have taken a rather special interest in Hana as well.

It’s the dawn of a hard time for her: Two demons occupying her home, a lesbian besieging her and two friends constantly pampering her. On top of all that, her ex shows up to reconquer his lost love …

Which way will be the right one for Hana? Which will lead to bliss? Which will lead to loneliness or even death? As Hana decides, so do you!

~ Story summary taken from the game’s Steam page.

* My Thoughts *

The title makes it sound like it’d be some funny joke otome game like Doki Doki Love Stomp, which is something I like. It sounds pretty wacky. But for some reason, I’m just not interested. Maybe it’s the demon thing I’m bored of seeing? Maybe it’s the fact that it’s not coming across as weird and wacky enough? I honestly can’t explain what’s putting me off. Perhaps being sick, studying and placement have temporarily killed my sense of humour?

I’ll definitely play the demo and see if it changes my mind. The normal me should be onto silliness in 0.0001 seconds.

SEPTEMBER EDIT: Still haven’t tried the demo yet, but I’m just not feeling it! I still can’t adequately explain why this isn’t drawing me in the way obviously silly stuff like this usually does…

[R18+] Anata no Torikago

Release date: Mid-September 2016
Platform: PC
Age rating: R18+
Developer and Publisher: Chocolate Mint Fudge
Official website: http://www.chocolatemintfudge.net/game/19torikago/index2.html
DL Site: http://www.dlsite.com/girls/announce/=/product_id/RJ181483.html
VNDb link: https://vndb.org/v16823

* Cast *

~ Iwatsuki Kanata – Kurobee
~ Shiroyama Masaya – Ganimata

* Plot Summary *

One rainy day…

The protagonist, Nakanishi Mina, suddenly gets kidnapped.
When she comes to, she finds herself attached to the bed by a chain in a luxurious room of a Western-styled mansion.

There, the butler of the mansion, Shiroyama Masaya, explains the situation- he was ordered by his master to imprison Mina inside this mansion.

The masked master of the mansion, Kanata, continues to have his way with the handcuffed Mina night after night, in spite of her protests…

* My Thoughts *

That’s a poorly-written summary, but since this sounds like a borderline-nukige, what should I have expected? Here comes the army of cliches: “one rainy day”, “but suddenly [X]! (kidnapped, in this case)”, “when she came to”…

The trial was pretty much designed to show the flavour of the sex scenes and that’s about it. If that’s what you want, go nuts, but I doubt there’s anything really interesting going on for those who think a gem could be hiding in here somewhere.

At least the developers are warning buyers of the unsavoury content. Don’t get me wrong- I’m rarely phased by any dark content in fiction anymore, so that’s not what Anata no Torikago’s problem is. From what I saw in the trial, it’s pretty tame.

I feel that the main limitation of this game is that it has nothing interesting on offer. The writing is bland, the characters are generic, the art is good for an indie effort but ultimately not really standout… That’s three important elements of any visual novel KO’d.

So yeah… I’ll be staying away from this mansion, thanks.

  1. Why so harsh with Bara ni Kakusareshi Verite?! XD I am French and own this game, and yes, it doesn’t make any sense historically speaking, but it’s a very fun play, imo anyway :p I’m a big fan of Marie Antoinette and know a lot about her and the history around the French revolution, and all the historical inaccuracies in this game didn’t bother me, actually being able to pick up all these inaccuracies made it even funnier to play XD (especially concerning the protagonists, when you know their true history, it’s a blast to see them become cheesy otomege lovers XD) it’s just a fun game to play ^^ anyway, I hope you’ll give it a try someday 😉 (and Robespierre is a cutie :3)

    • Hello, Simmi! I think it’s the first time I’ve seen you on here, so welcome to Wonderland! =)

      I was harsh on BaraKaku? And here I thought I was being much more reasonable than I normally would be! x’D In the initial announcement of the game, I was pretty much completely dismissive… But over time, I’ve changed to “tough, but acknowledging of its potential”, with consideration to how much benefit of the doubt I’m willing to give if BaraKaku does well (slightly divisive, but more on the side of “well received”) since I quite liked Hanayaka Nari, Waga Ichizoku. I’ll freely admit that if Takagi Ayumi/Ichi Column weren’t involved, I would have been WAAAY harsher!

      But really, it was so interesting to read your thoughts on it, considering your background and the fact you’re a French history and Marie Antoinette enthusiast! I’m sure some other people from a similar standpoint like yourself would have rolled their eyes and skipped BaraKaku, so I’m happy to hear that you had fun playing it, too. I’m essentially the same with otome games that involve my personal interests/passions as well- in the end, I value a fun, or better yet, a good read.

      I honestly am considering picking up the DL version or a cheap hard copy of BaraKaku now, since it sounds like it has a decent story in spite of the warped historical accuracy (though funnily enough, I saw some “could have tried to be less accurate for happier/less dark/etc.” comments, so it takes all sorts!). I like Takagi Ayumi and Ichi Column so I ought to cast my dollar vote! =)

      Anyway, thank you for your honesty and for reading my post. If you plan on reviewing BaraKaku, please do let me know if you wish as I’d love to read what a French history buff thought of it at length! =D

      • Thank you for your reply! : D

        to be honest I really am a newbie in the world of Otoge, so even if I’m loving BaraKaku I don’t have any reference to compare it to XD So maybe it’s a crappy game for specialists like you, (I have to admit the plot is a little ridiculous but it makes it even more fun to play imo :p) Actually BaraKaku is the first Otoge I picked up in Japanese, before that I only played Tokimeki 1,2, 3 in English and another one that I can’t remember the title for XD I got really excited for BaraKaku because of the whole Marie Antoinette thing (and I’m a big fan of that) and yes I’m sure many French would probably hate on this game and be like “OMG what are they doing to our history?!” but personally I really don’t mind, it’s just a game and if it can get some Japanese girls interested in our history then cool! (although they might be disappointed after looking at the actual protagonists portraits XD).

        And yes It’s my first time being here 🙂 I got a ps Vita especially for BaraKaku and thought I may as well look for other otoge and so I’ve been looking through dozens of blogs/websites/reviews like yours :p It’s nice to see that the Otoge community is so welcoming! and now I just ordered another two games for my vita, Wand Of Fortune R and Kamigami Infinite (despite all the bad reviews, I really like the art and I thought it would be an easy one to start with :p)

        BaraKaku is as you probably have guessed, filled with inaccuracies, to start with Princess Antonia didn’t move to France at the age of 16 but 14 : p but I understand well enough why they chose to change that XD They also made her a little on the bitchy side, this actually is bugging me a little as I know she was quite the opposite and I’m afraid people might think she was actually the spoiled brat we see in the game. the rest of the game doesn’t make any sense hystoricaly so it’s easy enough to ignore the facts and just go with the game’s logic 🙂 But I’d be happy to make a review once finished : D

        • Okay I just completed one of the characters route, and jesus christ it gets intense in the last chapters D’:

        • You’re welcome! And sorry for my delayed reply.

          I don’t think BaraKaku is “crap” or even “crappy”. To be perfectly honest, I would have been surprised if it were “irredeemably crappy” because of the staff behind it. At worst I predicted it’d be “kinda crap”. But it seems like it’s “mostly good, but opinions vary on the details”. Considering how poorly a good handful of games have done, this isn’t a bad place to be at all.

          When I say a game is “bad” or “crap” in my monthly posts, it’s more like I’m saying “it LOOKS crap” based on my first impressions of it. Granted, I’m usually correct because I know what I like, what I want, etc. and have become critical over the years stemming from disappointment after disappointment in my years of being a visual novel fan. If I just accepted every game into my “To Play List” because it’s “fair” to give every single thing the benefit of the doubt… it’d be never-ending. Other times, I simply don’t think the game is worth the asking price. So if I see it cheaper, I may pick it up.

          You may find that as you play more otome games, your preferences, tolerances, etc. will change and you’ll develop a keen “filter” for what ends up on your play list or not. At first, it’s all very exciting and you just want to play everything! Some fans still stay like this, others (like myself) do not. Whichever side you end up on, there will always be something to play! If someone like me can have loads of stuff to eventually read, a more positive person like you will do fine. =)

          Yes, the otome gaming community in general is very nice. Much more polite than I am! I hope my blog will help you stay up-to-date on what is going on and what’s coming out. Most of the blogs on my Blogroll are great places to start for reviews and news tidbits. Also, many English-speaking otome fans gather on the Otome Games Reddit. They’re a real nice bunch and will be happy to recommend games. The slight downside is that most of them are English-only, but the obvious upside is that they’re very helpful in recommending English otome games.

          Very interesting to read the little fictional changes they made. But as you said, if a player became interested enough in the history, they will read up on it and learn what *really* happened. I’ve done this a couple of times with various themes, settings, etc. in many VNs I’ve read.

          If you do find the time to review it, again, I’d love to read it. =)

          Hope you enjoy Wand of Fortune (I’m planning on playing it… One day… T_T) and Kamigami no Asobi!

Don't be shy, leave a reply!
