~ Staff Blog (20/7): The staff discusses the moments after the prologue. The very first event after it is the “Light of England Party” in which both the Lancaster (Red Roses) and York (White Roses) House members are in attendance. Due to the effects of Pack’s magical rose seed, Charlotte (the protagonist) is also invited. Thus, this scene marks the first meeting between the main love interests and Charlotte.
~ Staff Blog (22/7): The significance of wine is discussed in this entry. Wine was considered an essential daily item. However, England (at the time) was not able to manufacture it on their own, so wine was imported into the country with the French region Acquitaine being a major supplier (other regions such as Anjou and Bourgogne are also mentioned). In exchange for the (Acquitaine) wine, England exported items such as lumber and wool to Flanders. However, due to England being defeated by France in the Hundred Years’ War, this arrangement began to gradually see some changes. The House of Lancaster is described as being bound by political relations since ancient times, whereas the House of York is described as trying to keep up with the changing times. A map illustrating the English and French regions and territories (as well as the English territory taken by France) at the time is shown to aid reader understanding.

  1. Guess I should have figured Project Shiro to Kuro would end up being an Alice in Wonderland game. I don’t know why I didn’t even think of that lol.

Is it just me, or do R18 labels always end up having a lot of sister labels? Haha regardless Les Grande Odalisque looks very Arabian Nights to me so I’ll be sure to keep an eye on it. I won’t lie, I adore like Arabian Nights settings, they’re so beautiful to me haha ^q^ Steam Prison is looking very nice, but yeah I’m not going to touch that unless it does decently well review wise www

Another great post! As usual, thanks for all your hard work~

    • Thanks as always, Usagi!

I completely agree about the Shiro to Kuro no Alice! I wasn’t even thinking of Alice in Wonderland at all. Maybe deep down, I still have hope in the big companies being able to move on from tired concepts.

It’s not just you- lot of R18+ companies do have sister brands. My groundless guesses are two things- 1) Kalmia Scarlet will be making “higher quality”, higher production value games and will have similar pricing as regular PC otome games (unlike Kalmia8, who sell low-to-mid price games) or 2) Kalmia8 wants to rebrand itself; using Kalmia Scarlet as a sister brand to sell certain types of games that won’t match the rebranding. For instance, maybe Kalmia8 wants to head in a light-hearted direction and Kalmia Scarlet is more serious… or vice-versa.

I didn’t even think of Arabian Nights (I haven’t read it at all) for Les Grande Odalisque, but I have been wondering if it’d be a maid-master kind of game because of “odalisque”. I really don’t care for maid-master relationships, even though I do really like interclass romances.

LOL yeah, I doubt Steam Prison will be a trainwreck, but I wouldn’t pay lots of money for Ozmafia’s level of writing.

  2. Les Grande Odalisque looks very interesting.
I was wondering, since unfortuantely rape is mostly in R18 games, are there ones without it?
    Do you have any recommendations?
I’d like to try an R18 game, but being that physical copies are hard to come by, expensive, or might have restrictions set on it if I imported it, how do I download games from the site (or can I?)
Do they accept US debit/credit cards/paypal?

Thanks so much as always, Laramie! XD

    • Hi Leaf! Sorry for the delay in replying.

I’m pretty indifferent to Les Grande Odalisque at the moment, since not a whole lot of information is available yet. However, since I didn’t have bad experiences with both Kalmia8 games (Bocchi Musume was funny and Torikago no Marriage was just OK), I really want to see what Kalmia Scarlet is all about.

To answer your question about rape in otome games, it’s (sadly) quite rare to encounter an R18+ title with no rape whatsoever. Most of the time, the “best” you can hope for is a game in which only specific routes/endings have it, and can be avoided if the correct choices are made. This means sacrificing 100% completion, which can sometimes mean missing out on full-completion post-game bonuses. It also means that if you want to be extra cautious, you ought to wait for walkthroughs.

Quite hard for me to accurately list which games don’t have rape. This VNDb list I compiled was made by removing rape tags, but it can’t be called accurate as tags rely on users to place them.

I am fairly sure these titles don’t have any rape, but since I played some of these a while ago, my memory may have failed me:

~ Love and Romance – A Study of Intimacy [English]
~ Bocchi Musume x Produce Keikaku. [Upcoming localisation]
      ~ Natalia
~ Cute Demon Crashers! [English. I haven’t played this one, but I’ve read it’s all consensual.]
      ~ Hatsukare Ecchi ~Visual Drama~ Satoru-hen
      ~ Sachi no Tenbin
      ~ Sakuya
      ~ Vampire Sweetie
~ Kare to Kanojo to Koi no Sankaku
~ Tsubasa no Oka no Hime: A red and blue moon -finite loop- [I haven’t played this one, I’ve read it has fem-dom but no rape.]

      R18+ Games I Recommend:
~ Bocchi Musume x Produce Keikaku. – Lots of fun, but not for those who want a compelling story. On the shorter side.
~ Chou no Doku Hana no Kusari [Has rape, but it’s avoidable] – Great story and on the darker (but not too much so) side. I think its “hidden” yuri route is amongst the best ones I’ve ever read in an otome game.
~ Koezaru wa Akai Hana [Has rape, but it’s avoidable] – Much-loved by the community, and I can definitely see why. It has a good story and good play length.
~ Sachi no Tenbin – Only if you’re OK with a short game. It’s not stunning and the best part is basically the eleventh hour IMO, but it’s enjoyable enough for its low price.
~ Sakuya – On the shorter side as it’s a doujin game, but the story is good. The sex scenes are tame and not frequent. I’d recommend it for apprehensive R18+ first-timers.
~ Sumire no Tsubomi – [Has rape, but it’s avoidable.] Not a favourite of mine, but I recall enjoying it for what it was. It’s a long game (starts from high school and delves into the characters’ lives after graduating).
~ Yoshiwara Higanbana [Has rape, but it’s avoidable. It’s on the darker side anyway, so that may not sit well with you.] – Brilliant story, but not for those who need a happy ending. I considered this game the best of what I played in 2015 alongside Zettai Kaikyuu Gakuen. It’s on the text-heavy side even for a VN plus the writing has a ton of archaic words and references that could be too complex for those not confident in Japanese yet.

As for buying them… It really depends on the brand, how old the game is and where/if/how many copies are still available. Most R18+ games are sold physically (especially otome titles) and even if download versions are available, they’re usually sold on sites where they region block non-Japanese visitors anyway (like bloody DMM). So a lot of the time, you’re limited to using a proxy/forwarding service to buy copies.

I’ve never had an issue with importing R18+ games (I’m in Australia) and as far as I know, I haven’t heard my UK or US friends complain. I’d say 99% of forwarding/proxy services accept US cards, since I’ve never had my Australian bank cards rejected before.

Hinano wrote a nice article on import otome shopping! You can find specific details about certain stores and services.

Also, please feel free to ask me directly- I may be able to provide you with more insight on certain stores/services; especially ones in the article that Hinano doesn’t visit regularly or were new at the time.

You’re very welcome, Leaf! Great to hear from you again. =)

      • Laramie thank you SO much! *hugs*
Don’t worry about late replies-I’m guilty of them too and haha lately things have come up which have hindered my planned reviews and stuff 😛
I honestly really appreciate your thoutful answers and how you take so much time out of your day to answer our questions.
I definitely have a lot to consider from your list now and haha good to know I wasn’t not seeing the place to buy and download the game after all. I’ll look into a proxy.
As always, thank you so much, Laramie, and have an awesome day! XD

        • You’re welcome! I’m happy to have been able to help.

I naturally end up typing heaps anyway, but yes… I prefer to answer questions as thoroughly as possible.

I’m not sure how much proxies can help as that only masks where you’re from but not the country your credit/debit card is from. I’ve heard this method worked for some people though, so you may be in luck! I hope it works out, since it’d save you from the proxy/forwarding hassle and associated extra costs.

          Again, thanks for reading!

Don't be shy, leave a reply!
