The Sunday Otome Gaming Mail: Issue #20

Good evening!

Welcome to another issue of The Sunday Mail. It’s much quieter this week compared to the last. The highlight of this week is news of MangaGamer localising Bocchi Musume x Produce Keikaku!

+ Reporting period: 27/6/2016~03/7/2016 +

New game announcements:

Release date announcements and delays:

Teaser site updates:

MangaGamer have announced during the 2016 Anime Expo (which ran from July 1st~4th) that they will be localising R18+ otome game company Kalmia8’s second title, Bocchi Musume x Produce Keikaku. The localisation is entitled “Fashioning Little Miss Lonesome“, a website has been set up but there’s still no word on its release date as of yet. There will also be a Steam version without the sexual content available.

In their most recent staff blog update, PIL-VAMP have announced that they will be running a Twitter campaign for Mashou Megane until 29/7/2016. There are five prizes up for grabs, which are autographs of Peach, Cidre, Doutei, Ouji-sama and Karen’s voice actors- one actor per autograph board. 5 lucky Twitter users could win one of the five autograph boards! To enter the competition, fans must follow @PIL_VAMP and Tweet two hastags, the first is “#魔性眼鏡” and the second is “#[name of character prize wanted here]”. So if I wanted Peach’s VA’s autograph, my second hashtag would be “#ピーチ”.

Operetta have released a mobile game for Tsumikui ~Sen no Noroi, Sen no Inori~ called Tsumikui ~Tama no Ito Tsunagi~. It is a puzzle game of a mostly light-hearted nature in comparison to the actual PC game coming out this month.

Red Entertainment released a soundtrack of Kenka Banchou Otome on 29/6/2016. It will also include the theme songs used in the PSV game.

Cool-B will be publishing a visual fanbook of Sangoku Rensenki ~Otome no Heihou~. Called Toiro Nagairo. It will be available for sale on 29/7/2016.

  1. Oh wow, I can’t believe they’re localizing Bocchi Musume x Produce Keikaku!! That’s good news though! Always exciting to see more otome localizations, especially since this one is R18. I can’t remember if any other R18 otome games were localized professionally (I don’t think so?) so this is pretty exciting to hear about! Here’s hoping for more localizations in the future (≧∇≦)

Ahhh seeing updates to some of the websites for games I’m interested in always makes me super excited haha (๑•̀ㅂ•́)و✧ Thanks again for all your hard work! (ʃƪ ˘ ³˘)

    • Hello again, Usagii!

I didn’t think Kalmia8 would act so fast, but I knew there was an interest on their part since they engaged with international fans and Tweeted in English a few times. While Bocchi Musume does have its flaws and isn’t the greatest story ever told, it’s fun, lighthearted and something a bit different from all the serious tryhards that tend to infect the R18+ otome sector. It’s a good choice, I think.

You’re very welcome! I hope you continue to enjoy my posts. =)

  2. I’m so excited for Fashioning Little Miss Lonesome!! ❤

Thanks for sharing your posts, as always 😀

    • Hi otometantei!

I’m excited for you all! I’ll definitely be buying the localisation as I’m happy to support the game itself and Kalmia8 for being the first PC R18+ company to take a chance on us. Bocchi Musume is also a pretty good choice, IMO.

You’re welcome! Thank you for reading. =D

  3. Today has been a day of miracles rofl I’m so happy to see more localizations and chances on otoge.
I want to buy Cat’s path on Anicon…but I also want to play the whole thing in one go.

    • Leaf! Great to see you.

Yes, it has been a wild couple of days for the non-Japanese otome world. I’m happy with MangaGamer and Kalmia8, but not so much Aksys. Not only do I think their localisation choices are disappointing (especially since Otomate has a pool of good games), but I fear they will go he Norn9 route because all localisations are planned for 2017. Sounds like quantity over quality, to me. Especially since I don’t believe that buying any and all localisations is helpful overall.

That’s the thing about split releases- I prefer to wait and just play everything in one go, too (since my backlog is long, it’s not like I can’t play other things in the meantime). However, since doujin companies typically don’t have a consistent release schedule, I’d buy the paths as they come out since you don’t know when the next one is coming out. Some may argue that waiting in the case of doujin is important since there’s no guarantee they’d finish their projects, anyway. However, I feel it’s safe to trust Zeiva (if they’re even doujin anymore?) as they have a track record of completed games.

Anicon looks cute, though the “human animal transformation” or kemonomimi moe in general has a very high rate of being crapola- with Dandelion apparently and Black Wolves Saga obviously being exceptions. It also doesn’t help that Cat is a tsundere, which immediately gives me a poor impression due to Sturgeon’s Law. Hopefully Anicon can be included in the “exceptions” list. I will give the trial a shot, though, because it doesn’t cost me a thing and if I like it, I’d be really happy to support a good OELVN dev.

      Thanks for reading!

P.S.: I read your review of the Anicon: Cat trial and that made me more curious!

      • I hear you. I really hope that isn’t the case with Aksys, but so many fans blew up at them so maybe they’ll take heed of that. I’ll support all the games they put out bc I want more otoge to come here in the West but I also am really hoping they step up their game. We don’t deserve half assed translations. Guys can complain all the llike about us getting otome games but they get so angry to find that even despite all these releases, they still have a ton more games for them than we ever will.
I want to trust Zeiva too but I’ve heard from their tumblr they’re having problems bc the artist for one of their games ended contact with them and they need CGs. I hope things get better.
Aw thank you, and I hope you enjoy the trial!! And I’m saving up for Kokorogawari! XD

        • I can only hope that Aksys learned their lesson. Our community is full of dedicated fans, so stupid translations/localisations- especially of popular titles- will be noticed immediately and will spread like wildfire. While I’m still open to playing Code: Realize in English someday, I will not touch Norn9.

We’re in a difficult position- you need to buy the localised titles to encourage more to come, but supporting subpar efforts basically tells the companies that we’re OK with subpar efforts and they don’t need to spend more effort, resources, etc. on higher quality since the consumers are “satisfied” already. It may not necessarily be a true reflection of our thoughts, but that’s what a “dollar vote” is all about. Companies see things more like “Many people paying for it = they will buy it, let’s make more related stuff!”, not = “They like [ABC], but [XYZ] improvements for next time!”. Any business worth their salt will aim for the lowest cost and effort they can get away with for the highest profit and efficiency.

Since I firmly believe in using one’s dollar vote for titles that really reflect your true interests at heart, I don’t like seeing this blind buying of localisations with the flawed notion that it’d directly help in improving quality. You’ll see more games, sure. But will you see more satisfactory or above quality localisations or titles? Not necessarily. Continuing this buying method will give further rise to opportunistic worms like E2 Gaming and the people behind that Alice in the Country of Hearts mobile disaster. I’m particularly saddened by E2 Gaming, because Taishou x Alice is wicked. In Aksys’ case, one can only hope that the many complaints made an impact and inspired them to better themselves.

That’s why I never buy 1st-time localisations (i.e., not sequels, prequels, etc. from a series and company already established as having passable or above translations) straight away. I will wait for reviews or opinions from my friends and make sure I’m supporting good translations/localisations. That’s the message I want to send.

Oh, some of the bishoujo-ge fans honestly need a reality check. They get way more Kickstarter support and corporate support than otome games have been. Otome fans [in my experience] tend to be more open to bishoujo-ge, but the reverse doesn’t hold true at all. I don’t bother interacting with the particularly stupid and ignorant ones at length that just erroneously label many of us “fujoshi” and get back to pining over Generic Moe Loli #984/Generic Moe Big-Titted Gal #258.

Ah, that sucks for Zeiva! That might explain why things slowed down and went quiet for them. I saw on Twitter that Mirage may be interested in Steam Greenlight, so I hope they can get things sorted out soon, as well. Hopefully they can find a good one since they’re established in the OELVN world (especially with otome fans) and I’m sure somebody would want to work for them.

I hope I like the trial, too!

Thanks very much, my love! I wish Kokorogawari is free… T_T No offence will be taken at all if you prefer to wait until there’s more to go on. We don’t plan to fade away like many doujin groups do, but that’s what consumers hear all the time so it’s understandable they want more foundation.

          • I completely agree! And apparently Aksys Games has been blocking those who messaged them about the translations…which is so wrong of them to do.
I honestly was super impressed with their localization of Code Realize so for them to sink so low like that was hard to see.
And omg that’s so true! Is it so difficult for those guys to give otome games a chance? Or are they not comfortable with their sexuality and are insecure enough to snub their noses at it?
They wonder why they never have a gf and this is why. Bc they’re so damn hypocritical and childish. Of course, that’s not all of them. Soem are really nice who do give otoge a chance, and I appreciate them for not having double standards.
And haha it doesn’t bother me at all that your game isn’t free. I gladly buy anything that will support you. You’ve been putting your all into this for so long and deserve some $ for that work. So thank you!! XD
ANd good. I hope to see more future games form you in the future ;P Just don’t die on us rofl

            • Whoa, that’s dodgy as hell! Makes me not want to support ANYTHING of theirs as it’s a painful reminder of E2 Gaming. I feel sorry for the fans who trusted them enough to voice their concerns, only to be given the cold shoulder. Terrible!

The situation with guys and otome games is similar to how it’s OK for girls to say that girls are hot, but guys admitting other guys are hot will be instantly labelled a homosexual. Also, many people have misconceptions/misgivings about the otome fandom- low quality due to the proliferation of mobile garbage, the huge amount of koebuta, the taking off of the controversial do-S trend, the massive amounts of inane young fangirls, lack of intelligent narratives/intelligent discussion, people spreading misinformation about fujoshi and otome game fans as being one and the same, etc. I even know female VN fans who won’t touch otome games for some of these reasons.

Awwww, you’re too kind! Thank YOU for yout support. It really warms my heart and makes me want to work even harder!

Haha, I’m not even thinking about future games now. It would be nice if writing VNs were to become my job.

I don’t plan on kicking the bucket until at least Kokorogawari is made! xD

              • Right? It’s really depressing to see that but hopefully they make up for their mistakes…they are a professional company so at the least they have that over E2 rofl
ANd that makes ssense but it;s still sad to see the double standards thing.
And np:) I really look forward to it and I hope that you can get that job if you really want it!
