The Sunday Otome Gaming Mail: Issue #4

DengekiGirlsStyleOtomeAwards2015

It’s already been a whole month since the first issue… Time flies so fast! We’re now at issue #4 of The Sunday Otome Gaming Mail!

The highlight of this issue is perhaps the special report covering the final results of the Dengeki Girl’sStyle 2015 Otome Game Awards. From this week onwards, I’ll also be setting up “countdown alerts”, which are aimed to help remind you of visiting websites of games that are nearing release so that you can check out any countdown content (if they have any).

As always, thanks for reading!

+ Reporting period: 07/3/2016~13/3/2016 +

Potential countdown alert: Dance with Devils, to be released on 24/3/2016.

Since The Sunday Otome Gaming Mail is a weekly release, it’s quite easy to miss countdowns or report them when they’ve already begun. So the “potential countdown alert” is designed to remind readers of closely approaching release dates so they can check out websites themselves between issues.

The majority of otome games that do organise countdown website events start them 7 days before the release date of the game, including the actual date of release. Another common starting point is 14 days away. However, other companies may begin according to the amount of characters the story has (so each character gets a turn, basically) or as early as a month away (typically, these earlybirds make weekly countdowns until the last seven days). So there’s no real way to make perfectly accurate predictions, but my advice would be to check the games you’re interested in everyday during the month before its release (especially 7 days away, the most common countdown periods) and connect with the company or game’s social media accounts.

Countdowns are already under way for R18+ PC game Bocchi Musume x Produce Keikaku. and Wand of Fortune’s PlayStation Vita port, Wand of Fortune R.

Prototype announced that Daisy2’s hit second title, Zettai Kaikyuu Gakuen ~Eden with roses and phantasm~, will be getting a PlayStation Vita port. As with Daisy2’s previous ports, Prototype will be handling the publishing side of things and they’ve opened its teaser site to the public. They plan on releasing the port sometime during June 2016. You can also read Daisy2’s announcement of this on their staff blog.

The official website opens and the release date got confirmed for Broccoli and Sunrise’s collaboration PlayStation Vita otome game, Magic Kyun! Renaissance. The game is planned for release on 21/9/2016, with Broccoli handling the publishing and HuneX set to be the developers.

The release date of the second Dynamic Chord game Dynamic Chord feat. Liar-S’ append disc has been set for 29/4/2016. Players must have the initial Liar-S game installed before being able to enjoy the new content. The new additional content includes a romance route for sub-character Haruna Soutarou, some parts of the story being told from the main guys’ perspectives, as well as an “Encore” scenario (set after the events of the initial Liar-S game) for all four members of Liar-S.

Other confirmed release dates include:

Hakuouki Shinkai: Hana no Shou: 16/6/2016
Koezaru wa Akai Hana ~Koi wa Tsuki ni Michibikareru~: 23/6/2016

R18+ otome creators Kalmia8 celebrated their success in mastering up their second title, Bocchi Musume x Produce Keikaku. by their initial release date! Prospective buyers can now be assured that there will be no delays.

D3 Publisher has invited players of Hyakka Hyakurou ~Sengoku Ninpou-chou~ to participate in a survey regarding their latest release. There are 24 questions to answer and participants have until 31/3/2016 to share their thoughts.

The novelisation of Otomate’s KLAP!! ~Kind Love And Punish~ will be released on 20/3/2016 and will be published by Hifumi Shobou. More specifically, it’s the novelisation of the main hero Touma’s route. The book cover illustration was drawn by the game’s character designer and artist, Kawahito Yasutake.

DMM and Otomate are collaborating to create a Hakuouki browser game! The two companies plan on opening its doors to the online game during the spring of 2016. Details are scarce and it doesn’t have an official name yet. However, what is known at present is that the online game will have patrol quests which upon completion, will unlock exclusive scenarios. Players also can stat-raise characters and use them for the combat parts of the game. It’ll basically be free-to-play, but some items will require you to pay for access to them.

Rejet has uploaded a collection of 3 limited period (voiceless) movies to the Dance with Devils PlayStation Vita game website from 10/3/2016~18/3/2016. Rem & Lindo’s videos aired from 10~12/3/2016, with Urie & Mage’s video planned for air during 13~15/3/2016 and Shiki & Roen’s during 16~18/3/2016.

In their most recent blog update of Winter Wolves’ official website, they’re pleased to inform that the progress of some of their upcoming games, including an otome game called Queen of Thieves is going well. Beta testing is still under way for C14 Dating. The beta is looking to be in good shape, with no major issues and only minor errors such as typos. The beta can be downloaded from Winter Wolves’ forums. There is still no news of a concrete release date, however, preorders are available to make if you enjoyed the beta.

Long-time doujin otome game creators agony celebrated their 12th anniversary on 10/3/2016.

Stellaworth and Daisy2 have pleased fans by opening an antenna shop full of Daisy2 merchandise in Stellaworth’s store, which is located in Ikebukuro. Amongst the merchandise will be exclusive products that were previously only sold at events or in F-Ragazza (Daisy2’s online store). However, fans have a limited time to purchase these products- they have from 10/3/2016 until 08/5/2016 before the antenna shop closes its doors! For those unsure what an antenna store is, Jim Breen’s Japanese Dictionary defines it nicely as a “shop used for testing sales of new products” or a “shop selling local specialities to Tokyo”. You can read more about antenna shops on AFAR or Go Tokyo.

An article about otome games (chiefly the smartphone varieties) and their players entitled “Why Women Are Choosing Virtual Boyfriends Over Real Ones” (authored by Pip Usher) has been published on the website of Vogue, a monthly fashion and lifestyle magazine for women of world renown.

+ Special Report: Dengeki Girl’sStyle 2015 Otome Game Awards +

Now that the April 2016 issue of otome magazine Dengeki Girl’sStyle has been released (on 10/3/2016), the final results of their 2015 Otome Game Awards have been published!

For those who are unfamiliar, the Otome Game Awards are conducted annually, with fans making their votes via voting cards provided by issues of the magazine closely leading up to the vote closure date, online or through the Animate stores. The nominees are essentially any release of the designated year and category. Voting periods run for about two months.

There are 12 categories in which the top ten best/most popular (i.e. most voted for) of each one are decided: Otome Game, Character (main love interests), Sub-character, Protagonist, Scenario, Seiyuu, Misc. Games (non-otome games), Characters of Misc. Games, Drama/Situation CD, Character Song, Anime (any genre) and Most Anticipated Otome Game.

However, due to it being quite possible for diehard fans to “spam” votes, the Otome Game Awards are not wholly reliable. That being said, it does provide good insight into which titles and people received the most fan love.

This year, 8,994 votes were cast.

  1. I really like these posts:) Ugh I cringe every time diawifebeaters is voted for. I am so pumped for wolves saga and wand of fortune.

    • Thank you, Leaf!

I’m happy you’re enjoying my Sunday posts! =)

I know; it’s both ridiculous and frustrating how popular Diabolik Lovers is. For better and for worse, some otome fans are so easy to please. No wonder the standards of writing and character building are nearing rock bottom. Also, I wish you’re not allowed to vote for ports- this is one of the reasons why some of the same games get voted for all the time! Looking at you, Pointless Hakuouki Port #850!

Kokuchou no Psychedelica should be a lot higher, especially for the Scenario category. At least it made it in the lists… I’m glad that Zettai Kaikyuu Gakuen made it in, even if I’m disappointed it didn’t reach the top 10. So much love for Arisu Yurika making it in the top 10 of the Protagonist category! Didn’t think she would beat the other self-inserts.

The Misc. Games category is possibly worse or just as bad as the main otome game categories- predictably oversaturated with second-rate shitty idol games, as is Misc. Games Characters.

      • Lol exactly!! And why are ports even allowed to be voted for? Just put some ads up for it lol.
Self-insert heroines are terrible. I dislike them a lot because they’re soooooo weak.
And I really want to check out Zettai Kaikyuu! ^^

        • I guess they justify the port thing because a handful of them have extra/new content, meaning that there is some “new” gameplay to vouch for or “new” writing to support. In a sense, by including any and every release of 2015 in the nominations list, you can get a more accurate look at what is popular. Perhaps they should have a category called “Best New Standalone Otome Game” or “Best First Release Series/Title”; something along the lines of that. That way, all readers can get a snapshot of overall popularity and which 100% new entries did well.

Personally, I strongly dislike self-insertion itself and self-insert heroines. I would justify it if creators did something interesting with the concept, but so far, I can’t think of anything like that. Maybe Amnesia comes the closest with the protagonist’s Amnesia, but too bad Heroine is a shoddy otome protagonist overall. Weakness is also OK if it’s justified and done interestingly. Most of the time, it’s just a lame way of creating a “damsel in distress” for the main guy to save. It’s quite sad.

I strongly recommend ZKG! Its port is set to come out in June, so you’d be better off going for it as it may have new/extra content. Plus so far in my experience, PSV games are often cheaper than PC ones, lol.

Don't be shy, leave a reply!
