The protagonist has been all alone since she was little. This is because she’s tall for a girl and she has a nasty look in her eyes. Even though she hasn’t done anything wrong, people around her become afraid…

As she advanced through school, that didn’t change. She accepted the situation and planned to quietly go through her school years until graduation.

However, two guys had spotted her.

“She’s the one we’ve been searching for!”

Her height and sharp gaze are seen by the world as fantastic qualities and strengths for a fashion model. The duo, composed of an aspiring producer and designer, was to kick into gear to showcase her talents. They were to transform her; this “raw material”, into a presence that will influence the world…!

…Such was their idealistic tale.
But the pessimistic protagonist ran away.

“…I decline.”

In spite of this, the two won’t stop trying to produce her into a model.
Even though she refuses, they definitely won’t stop.
They won’t stop pushing her into becoming a model.

Their first goal is to shoot a video of her and unveil it all over the world.
How will the duo’s transformation of the protagonist change her?
What is the future that awaits?

The “Lonely Girl Production Plan” lead by the two handsome, yet disappointing(?) duo now begins!

* My Thoughts *

Finally! An otome game for adults that doesn’t feel the need to take itself too seriously. Don’t get me wrong- I’m a big fan of utsuge and many of my favourite otome games are deadly serious. It’s just nice to see something a bit different since Bocchi is chiefly a comedy. They’re vanishingly rare in the adult otome world, especially comedies in which exaggerated expressions are pulled and people get smacked around. Unironic laughs are not that common in the all-ages world, too. Sometimes they crack good jokes, but comedy is rarely the secondary genre.

The two main boys are something you’d be more likely to find in a comedy anime rather than as otome love interests. Given how over-the-top they are, I even started to wonder if Saito and Miki are parodies of the do-S and do-M respectively, though they play some conventions of their roles too straight… so it’s more “tongue-in-cheek” rather than a straight parody. I like how they’re not overly idealised, and the game doesn’t hesitate to crap on their good looks by giving them silly expressions and almost proudly making their flaws the butt of many jokes. I usually have one guy I really prefer over the others, but in Bocchi’s case, I like them both equally!

While I urge anybody interested to play the trial before buying it as it’s not like your standard adult otome game… I really enjoyed it and am quite looking forward to playing the full game!

Getting allured and tempted by devils, her days change little by little.

The plot takes the same direction as the anime’s, with numerous endings awaiting this captivating tale.

Who will you choose?
Humans or devils?

* My Thoughts *

Look! A game totally not designed to cash in on the anime’s popularity!

I don’t like the sounds of the boring, cliché plot, don’t care about any of the characters whatsoever, the protagonist makes me sleepy, the art isn’t to my taste… As always, the sole redeeming quality is the seiyuu. Which means I pretty much have no reason to go near this.

When will Rejet start making good otome games again?

Mystic Destinies: Serendipity of Aeons

(Prologue, first chapters of each route; Shou route DLC)

Release date: 11-2-2016
Platform: PC (Windows, Mac)
Age rating: All-ages
Developer and publisher: Star Maiden Games
Kickstarter: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/starmaidengames/mystic-destinies-serendipity-of-aeons-otome-visual/description
Steam: http://store.steampowered.com/app/431510/

* Plot Summary *

You are an intelligent and practical nineteen-year old girl, in your first year of attending one of the best universities in Japan. A few years ago, your mother married a wealthy business owner. You plan to study hard and take his business over one day. Life can be tough at times, but it isn’t complicated.

That is, until your mother takes you to her ancestral home. It’s there that you learn of the supernatural world when she performs a ritual on you. You learn that you are not human, but actually a rare type of being called a homunculus. You were created in your mother’s image to serve as a transfer for her curse of immortality. And apparently, her ancient and potent sorceress powers.

After your magical powers are awakened, you learn through a series of events that not only does your university hold courses for supernatural students, but that many of your classmates aren’t even human. Through your new mystical classes, you’re informed about a threat to you that requires you to team up with a partner until you can get your powers under control.

Along the way, you’ll both learn to hone your powers as you fight intense battles. But as the semester wears on, you’ll also become closer as classmates – and maybe even lovers.

You’ve never needed anyone. But at the end of it all, there might just be one person you want.

~ The plot summary has been taken directly from the game’s Kickstarter page.

* My Thoughts *

Mystic Destinies will be a partitioned title- the prologue and first chapters of the individual routes are free to play. However, full individual routes must be purchased separately as DLC. For February, the rest of Shou’s route was released on the same day as the free-to-play prologue and first chapters.

Just to be crystal clear: While I much, much rather a game be completely released in one go… For the most part, I’m not against DLC, nor do I take huge issue with partitioned releases. I would say I feel “uncertain”. We’ve all heard about crowdfunding dramas at least once in our online lives now, plus Star Maiden Games are indie devs with no previous releases and are reliant on Kickstarter. There’s nothing wrong with this; it’s just that I won’t have any faith that the game is complete until I see that all routes are complete and available. There’s little that is more vexing than playing a partitioned game, only for the rest to not be completed for whatever reason.

More on Mystic Destinies itself… Aside from the fact that the characters are all university students (i.e. theoretically, maturer love interests rather than the horomone-addled high schoolers that make up 90% of otome games), it seems like pretty standard Japanese fantasy fused with a scholastic environment VN fare… for better or for worse. How a top-rated university’s supernatural courses manage to (presumably) stay relatively under wraps to the extent that the protagonist doesn’t even know about it until she enters them… I don’t know.

This kind of plot has been done quite a few times, though I guess the protagonist being a homunculus is a first in an otome game. Also, the fact that she actually has some grey matter between her ears and common sense (that hopefully won’t fly out the window when the plot needs her to suddenly make dumb choices) is a huge plus that does at points of interest to an otherwise bog-standard fantasy x school fusion VN.

Though the art style isn’t to my usual taste (whatever that is), I respect it as its more realistic style is very unique amongst the sea of anime styles.

At this stage, I’m not too keen- I won’t know if the plot is more interesting than it seems without playing it (of course), but I don’t want to start playing an incomplete game, only for development to get cancelled. If a full version or at least, all routes become fully available, then I’ll have a good think about it giving this a try since the protagonist seems interesting and I like the idea of maturer heroes.

Doki Doki Love Stomp: What does the Heart Say That My Muscles Cannot?

Release date: 12-2-2016
Platform: PC (Windows, Mac and Linux)
Age rating: All-ages
Developer and publisher: Bird Robot
Official website and download: https://birdrobot.itch.io/doki-doki-love-stomp
VNDb link: https://vndb.org/v18985

* Plot Summary *

A ridiculous wrestling dating sim! Play as Hulku-chan, a young Hogan-obsessed freshman attending Wrestling School. On her way to her first class on her first day, she runs into a mysterious, 8-foot-tall sophomore named Bully Demise and begins a journey of love, stomps, and heartbreak.

~ The plot summary has been taken directly from the official website.

* My Thoughts *

Another comedy otome game to enjoy! It’s clearly intended to be a silly-yet-enjoyable short game. I take no issue with it since I had at good laugh a unashamedly ridiculous titles like Ki ni Naru Otoko no Ko? and its sequel, Suki na Otoko no Ko?. Sometimes, it’s just good to laugh at silly things… especially after watching half the cast die in the last VN you played.

Sadly, I’m not familiar with wrestling so I may not understand jokes of that kind, so I hope it won’t be a problem… As for the aesthetics, I love the bright and cute, cartoony art style. Especially Hulku-chan’s design! No jokes, she’s one of the cutest otome protagonists I’ve encountered in a while. Plus she doesn’t look like every other one!

I’ll definitely be giving this one a whirl. Looking forward to some laughs!

Love in the Glen

Release date: ?-2-2016 → TBA
Platform: PC (Windows, Mac and Linux)
Age rating: All-ages
Developer and publisher: Sapphire Dragon Productions
Steam Greenlight: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=605181957
Official website: http://sapphiredragonproductions.com/love-in-the-glen/
VNDb link: https://vndb.org/v18877

* Plot Summary *

“Love in the Glen” is a romantic otome visual novel/dating sim with a fun interior design minigame. Follow in the steps of Zoe Richardson, an interior designer living and working in Los Angeles’ exclusive and stylish Westside, as she explores the true meaning of love, commitment and passion and how it exists on so many different levels and planes.

~ The plot summary has been taken directly from the official website.

* My Thoughts *

First of all, good on Sapphire Dragon for getting Greenlit on Steam. I really doubt this game will be coming out in February anymore, but still… Great job!

As for the novel itself… Interesting! I don’t think there has ever been an otome game about interior design before. It’s good to see a game in a real world setting without any of the Japanese companies’ compulsions to add pointless fantastical elements to it. Another huge bonus is how the company states that the narrative is like films by Nancy Meyers– I enjoyed Something’s Gotta Give and to a lesser extent, The Holiday. So maybe March is going for its third rom-com otome game.

As I’ve mentioned a few times, I’m not a huge fan of VNs with mini-games as I choose the VN medium when I just want to listen and read. However, I do think the idea of an interior design game is cute, and it’d be interesting to see if your skills impact the story at all.

It’s too bad that not a lot of information about the characters themselves are available. I hope it’s not just about the trendy upper-class in trendy houses and trendy locales, even if interior design is a pastime and industry often associated with the wealthy. The protagonist looks like an elegant, professional, mature and confident lady- I think she’s quite pretty! Hope she’s as cool on the inside as she is on the outside.

The only thing that tugs at me is the reception of Sapphire Dragon’s other games, particularly how they fared with their romance titles. Save for Silver Creek Falls, the games are mixed-to-averagely received. I don’t know if it means it really chooses its players or if it’s simply an average product, but…

I think this Love in the Glen has a pretty good concept, but perhaps I’ll wait for reviews or for at least, more information before buying it.
