* My Thoughts *

EDIT (10/5/2015): I was tipped off that ~Eternal Happiness~ is just a port of Abunai Koi no Sousashitsu. I’ll leave the details here anyway. Thank you very much to Hinano for pointing this out for me!

Since I haven’t played the original game, Abunai Koi no Sousashitsu, and I’m not interested in doing so, there’s not a lot I have to say or offer about ~Eternal Happiness~. For the uninitiated, the first Abunai Koi game was first released for mobiles, and was eventually adapted into a PSP game in May 2012.The two games have a distinctly “meh” feel to them, which isn’t exactly going to pique my interest. I do like the artist, Teita, though I feel like Teita’s full potential isn’t really being reached with this game. I have no idea why Gigno bothered making a port of a game made three years ago, to be honest. The reception of it wasn’t bad per se, but three years is a long time in the otome gaming world. How many long-time otome gamers actually remember Abunai Koi? Unsurprisingly, I’ll pass on this game, but don’t get me wrong, it doesn’t seem like a bad one- it’s just not interesting enough to me.

* Plot Summary *

The protagonist, Mihara Suzu, a student at Akarinkai Senior High School (commonly called “Akarin”), was heading towards school with her childhood friends Otonari Kanade and Shizuma Souta, along with her best friend Matsuri Ayame, as per usual. When they arrived at the front gates, they hear a certain story from Akarin High’s student council president, Aoba Taiga:

“The truth is, one of the students has gone missing.”

According to Taiga’s story, during the previous night, an Akarin High School student boy went missing after acting like a different person; behaving violently while he was playing with his friends. Though the story worried them, the bell signalling the beginning of the first class forced them to end the conversation.

The next day, what Suzu and her friends saw in the schoolyard was the boy who went missing. He had a bizarre appearance and was crucified.

A strange incident that plagued the peaceful school.
From there on, a mystery interwoven by love and madness begins. How will it end?

* My Thoughts *

Great to see the talented Sarachi Yomi, who did the artwork for the Arcana Famiglia series, get more work as I reckon she’s fantastic- while it’s recognisable it’s her artwork, Sarachi can still change styles skilfully. I love the bright, colourful illustrations of Possession Magenta. The website design is also pretty cool. I also liked how HuneX released character introduction videos, so you could get a better grasp of the main characters’ personalities. So far I have the best impression of the military nut Aoba Taiga. I bet he’s a bag of laughs just waiting to be opened!

As for my impression of the plot, I’m not sure what to think of it yet. It’s really pushing the “love x madness” angle, which worries me in giving rise to shitty yandere moments. I don’t have extreme opinions of yandere; I just hate it when it comes out of nowhere or for no good reason. Will the “love x madness” theme be a poor excuse for dirt-cheap yandere moe or something more?

What Possession Magenta has going for it is its bizarre mystery. I really do want to know why on Earth some kid went nuts and then gets crucified the next day! Given the rating, it’s doubtful that he died, so perhaps the story won’t go as darkly as its “love x madness” theme suggests. It’s too bad that the victim is somebody that the protagonist has nothing to do with- why should I care? It would have been more interesting if it happened to a main character, IMO.

Possession Magenta is definitely an interesting title, though some elements of it makes me skeptical. So much so, that I’ll be waiting for reviews to see if I’ll still be keen.

* Plot Summary *

Japan, year 2020.

The protagonist, Fujieda Neri, lives in the poor district within the “Ring Area”, which surrounds the Tokyo Bay.

She lived a modest, but peaceful lifestyle. However, one day, her father- her only family- had suddenly disappeared.

“Go to Kaikyuu Academy.”
– That was all what was written on the mysterious letter left behind.

The private Kaikyuu Academy…
A prestigious boarding school attended by sons and daughters from privileged families, founded upon the goal of educating them well in order to give them the tools to support future Japan.

Following the letter left by her father, Neri transferred into Kaikyuu Academy, a school where celebrities gather. It is extremely luxurious, however, being grounded upon a social caste system, the academy is dominated by “social class discrimination”.

At the very top of the social hierarchy is the “Queen“, endowed with incredible political influence, she rules over the students.

Superior to everyone else but the Queen are the chosen elites belonging to the privileged class, “The Roses in Full Bloom“.

The commoner class in which most of the students belong in, “The Nameless Honeybees“.

The Ignored Stones“… Even though they’re fellow students, those in The Ignored Stones are regarded as having the same rights as a servant- they’re oppressed and enslaved.

Finally, there is “The Resistance“, which is an organisation composed of students who oppose the social hierarchy system.

In a society far more disparate than she had ever imagined, Neri finds “love”, and gradually, a certain “truth” about the academy surfaces. What is this “truth?”

* My Thoughts *

Finally, Zettai Kaikyuu’s release is within reach after a being in development for a while and its delay of release since December 2014. Given the lack of an OP (though some companies release OPs and PVs late), it’s possible that there may be another delay, so I’m not exactly holding my breath. Anyway, this is Daisy2’s latest project that doesn’t involve their successful Sangoku Rensenki ~Otome no Heihou!~ series. You know, Zettai Kaikyuu has two major flaws to it- boring protagonist and a somewhat ridiculous scenario given its setting. I mean, come on, this isn’t set 200 years ago- what’s with the archaic social class discrimination thing?

In spite of this, I’m still interested in this game as I do like plots that deal with inter-class relationships plus I’m liking the mysteriouness. I want to know this “truth”, who or what the hell this “Queen” lady is and what happened to Neri’s father. What’s with this school? Why is social class so important to the majority of the attendees there?

Another thing I definitely like about this game is the fact that Wada Beko is the artist! God, I just love her artwork, and am so glad to see her get more work. I hope this game is successful just even for her sake. While Wada Beko’s artwork is a super-bonus, I promise you that it’s not a primary factor in wanting to play this game as trying to pick a game based on plot and character merits is something I do my best to stick to! Yes, it helps in my decision, but it’s not sealing the deal.

I hope Daisy2 release a trial, so I can make my final decision to get this game then. At 8,500 yen just for the normal version, it’s quite a steep price, so I want to be damn sure I’m still interested before I buy it. No amount of beautiful artwork and talented seiyuu can cure a near-$100 dent in the bank!

* Plot Summary *

When you, Arisu Yurika, passed through the looking-glass, you saw a world in which everything is the contrary…

When you came to, you became lost wandering around in a pitch black world.
You had lost your memories.
You have no idea what you are. You don’t even know your own name.
In this pitch black world, not a single person other than yourself is present. Loneliness and unease fills your heart.

It was at this moment, you come across a young man.
Possessing shiny blond hair and beautiful blue eyes, the boy’s name is “Alice”.
When he sees you, he calls you “Arisu”.

You learn that he too, had lost his memories, and is only able to recall his name, “Alice”.
Troubled by this, you lead a reluctant Alice and once again, wander around this world.

Before long, you and Alice find a large, large looking-glass made of crystal.
Inside the looking-glass was a strange world in which Japanese and Western cultures were blended together, and it makes you feel nostalgic.
Like that, you and Alice peek through the world in the looking-glass You both pass through the mirror and enter the Mirror Country.

Inside the Mirror Country, genders of the characters from fairytales are reversed, and they greet you as the “protagonist”.
Having become the “protagonist” of a famous fairytale in the Mirror Country, you weave just a little bit crooked tale with just a little bit crooked main characters of fairytales.

What will happen at the end of this tale?

~ Kaguya’s Tale ~

As usual, Arisu was working at the café. One day, Kaguya, had just had a shocking talk about breaking up in the café. When you greeted him, relying on just impulse alone, Kaguya confesses his feelings to you and asks, “would you like to go out with me?”

Since then, the two became lovers in the blink of an eye.
Kaguya is very kind, however, when asked about his background, he is vague, and when pressed further, Kaguya reveals that he has no home to return to and no money. Receiving permission from the cafe’s owner, Cinderella, Kaguya becomes a live-in employee like Arisu, but…

How will the two’s path of love unfold?

~ Gretel’s Tale ~

When Arisu came to, she found herself in an unfamiliar room.
It was an ordinary room, with a full array of livingware. However, what was strange was her being dumped on the bed with her wrists and ankles being tied to it.

“It is safe here, so we’ll live here together, older sister.”

From then on, Arisu’s life of confinement by her younger brother Gretel had begun.

What is Gretel’s motive? What will become of Arisu?
Also, what is the reason why Arisu is in a situation like this?

* My Thoughts *

As the title suggests, this is the second game in the Taishou x Alice series. I played the trial of the first game, and really enjoyed it! I’ll definitely get to playing that, and if I deem it review-worthy (as in, if I have anything notable to say about it), I’d like to post one about it. Arisu is a fantastic protagonist so far, so I hope that’s the case with Episode II. That being said, I’m not too interested in Kaguya or Gretel, so I’m not super keen on Episode II- I will only play it if I enjoyed the first game. While Kaguya’s story seems fine, Gretel’s whole “Yandere Tengoku” thing as well as being the dreaded otouto character really isn’t helping things. I would only go into that scenario to see how the lovely Arisu will get out of that situation!

So yeah… I will be playing this if I like Episode I, otherwise, it’s a pass. It’s too bad Alice’s tale is so far away- he’s the most interesting guy.

  1. Haha I meh-ed at Abunai Koi too! I played the mobile version of Iza, Koi shusshin but I’ve never touched this because I like Police stories and I’m not gonna let a keitai game kill them. It’s really keitai art too, what a bad idea! But I’m glad Teita will be paid drawing easy things so he will have more time to work on Hyakka Hakurou :p

    Wow 8500 is steep for a normal edition 😮 My favourite Amazon though, will probably be having those lovely price-offs if you’re considering. I hate the father goes somewhere trope so I’ll definitely be missing this game, but I’d like to hear your thoughts when you’re done!

    I’ve been stalking PosMage since it was announced, and I really like the system and detective play-style! I guess like you say it isn’t going to be a dark story of any sort, given the techno-pop music and pop colours, but I’m curious to see how love wil bloom with a setting like this. I’m not a big fan of Sarachi Yomi’s art, but there are very interesting characters like the pooy guy, Englishman and China student so I’ll definitely be playing this 😀

    Ooh a LaCal approved protagonist! I gotta check this out in June and July when I’m gonna be out of games for summer holidays 😀

    • Thanks for reading as usual, Juu!

      To be honest, I’d be more surprised if somebody saw Abunai Koi and was like, “WOW! I JUST HAVE TO PLAY THIS GAME!” but that’s just my view throught my own lens, I suppose. Yeah, I totally agree about the art looking very “keitai”. It’s not like it’s bad or anything (c’mon, this is Teita we’re talking about!), but it’s just kinda… bland. I suppose it suits the more “realistic” setting, but still. I had no idea Teita is a man! These aliases can get confusing since some women like using male (or male-sounding) names.

      I guess the 8,500 is technically the “first press limited edition” price, but since that’s the ONLY edition I could see, it’s both the special and normal version, as contradictory as it sounds. i.e., the only version you can get unless it does so well they’ll continue to publish more copies. I could totally see you not being into Zettai Kaikyuu as I wrote the review. It really is standing on dodgy ground but we’ll have to see.

      Agreed about there being some interesting characters in Possession Magenta. As usual, bloody TWO childhood friends have been included purely to make me heave a heavy sigh, but the Chinese guy and the poor dude as well as Aoba Taiga makes up for it!

      Yes, I approve Arisu. I’d be onto that game even faster if there were a self-cest route! ;P

      • I actually have no idea if Teita is a man or woman but going by the alias I just assumed “he” ORZ

        Oh I guess that’s like D3P then! They only have like the ‘special’ that goes out of production after a while, but the price is the same as the normal edition. Like Why?!?! Hahaha. Yeah I’ll be looking at your review if you do one!

        Oh I really couldn’t care less about the childhood friends 😀 I’m not sure why they had to have a typical Quinrose lesbian character in there too (´・ω・`)

        Rofl self-cest! Admittedly, the last character is also the only one I’m interested in, but I guess I’ll download the trial to see!

  2. I read a review that abunai koi is just a bunch of ホモォ┌(┌ ^o^)┐ innuendos while the heroine is like popcorn.gif lol. eventually once they get over the homo though, apparently they decide they’ll get with the heroine in the ending. but don’t take my word for it, I never touched it! XD

    I think the vita port though is just a port of the psp game rather than a “sequel”. They added some new stuff like a route for John Smith.

    • That’s a shame… It really does feel like good police, army, etc. otome games are very few and far between. LOL, your description almost makes it sound like she “un-gays” them or something! xP

      Thanks very much for pointing this out to me! I’ve edited accordingly. 🙂

  3. So Possession Magenta will have a card system? It looks so fancy, I cannot believe this will be a dark mystery game. But then again, the 30 minutes in-game video did show us, that they can still create a creepy atmosphere even though everything is so colorful. xD I give them props for that. I’m just waiting for Hinano’s review first. She’s totally hyped about the game. wwww Well, I’m too, because I love the voice actors and the creepy mystery thing about getting possessed and having magenta eyes…. Hmmmm…. I wonder, what’s the mystery… wwwwww

  4. Hello! Thanks for reading again, Haruna.

    Yes, it seems like PM will have a card system that’s similar to tarot cards. Depending on the situation and characters, it seems like you have to choose the correct card to “purify/exorcise” possessed characters. I think that’s very interesting and it’s great that HuneX is getting players to have a more interactive role. Otherwise you’re just reading what Suzu is getting up to rather than having an active role in solving the mystery. Not that the former is bad; it’s just that I can appreciate having a more active role as that would a) be more fun to me and b) indicates more thought and effort was put into this game and system!

    I’m quite surprised that it’s a murder mystery. I think it’s the music and the contradictorily colourful artwork that makes it unsettling. I’m still concerned that the possession is just some excuse for suggestive situations, but I’ll have to see.

    Overall, I think PM has a lot of potential to be a good read, but I’m still going to check out reviews and such before considering buying.

    I wish these play videos get released before I post my monthly lists! I can see why it’s getting so much hype but never forget that the otome world is an expert at disappointment.

Don't be shy, leave a reply!
